NOTHING IS MORE STRESSFUL THAN OPEN SHIFTS ON A SCHEDULE! AM I RIGHT?

When my second care coordinator quit, due to the chaos of overseeing the CNA schedule, two thoughts came to my mind: 1. I don’t blame her at all, and 2. I’d better try this myself.

I was the Executive Director at the time but decided to take over the scheduling so I would know what it was like to take the last minute call offs, to feel the pit in your stomach when you have multiple open shifts, to handle all of the requests for time off, to hear things that make you say, “I can’t make this stuff up”, and on and on and on.

I learned firsthand that scheduling is crazy difficult, but………………. I also learned it can be done. However, here’s the thing – not everyone can do it.

Humble brag (but fully admit this didn’t occur during the recent Covid years) - during the 10 months as the scheduler, my care coordinator and nurse were never called in to cover a shift. Ok, maybe once! :)

I hope some of the principles I learned will be helpful. I look forward to our discussion!
